MKIV would be faster off the mark even with 1400kg to tow with 204bhp
MKV GTI would be faster once running as it "only" has 1328kg to tow at 197 bhp

More importantly torque for the 4 motion is 199lb/ft as opposed to the 207lb/ft of the GTI which gives a more realistic measure of what mid-range pulling power a car has.

The MKV GTI undoubtably has the better suspension and handling characteristics over the 4motion

In all the GTI would probably be pipped off the line, but once up and running the GTI would blow the 4motion into the weeds assuming it isn't wet

Pretty even fight on paper, although I think the extra weight hanging out the front would damage the V6 round a track and the extra torque would help the GTI out of corners.

Add a Stage1 remap to the Mk5 GTI and you'll get 300 ft lb torque and around 245 bhp

From reading that, on a track I think it would get its arse handed to it by a standard Mk5 GTI, and murdered by an Edition 30 or one with a few good mods.
