Experience - ED 30's with chip tune
« on: 05 November 2007, 21:33 »
Picked up my ED 30 on friday!!!

I'm happily running her in but wanted to know how noticeable the acceleration change is after a Revo or Bluefin etc.

I have read some articles that claim the Ed30 is ideal for the upgrade!!!

Thing is, the car feels pretty swift as is, so unless it's a big leap i'm happy to leave as standard.

plenty of choice, and they all give huge gains for the ED30 engine which is just a detuned S3 engine with a smaller intercooler.

As a example superchips (just as a reference!) provide the following data :

Vehicle
VW Golf GTI Edition 30

Original Max 244 BHP @ 6088 Rpm
Superchipped Max 307 BHP @ 6571 Rpm

Original Max 317 Nm @ 4752 Rpm
Superchipped Max 391 Nm @ 3140 Rpm

Power 61 BHP increase @ 6484 Rpm
Torque 82 Nm increase @ 3762 Rpm

now thats an increase you WILL notice lol

I have been looking at tuners too after my Ed30 is run in , and for me Oettinger/Revo or APR look to be the tuners of choice.

APR for me, good gains approx 300bhp, but also awesome is local and I've had no problems with me last couple of motors that were APR'd.
Revo stg2+ & lots more

I have bluefin on my ed30. You will definitely notice the power/torque increase. low to mid range, the car just pulls so strongly, imagine driving at one gear lower and you'll get the rough idea. However, the car feels less impressive past 5K rpm. Of course it's still much better than stock, but compared to the mid range shove, i feel the top end can do with more 'fizz.'
I have heard that GIAC from regal provide a more aggressive map aiming more at huge power than drivability like the Bluefin.
I'd say get one that closer to you so you get support from new maps etc if needed.
I wanted APR simply because you can switch maps using the cruise control stalk, but Manchester in 140 miles from me, so bit too far. I'd go with APR if i remapped again, because they do rolling road remaps, unlike generic bluefin maps.
So far only cars that have been faster are a M3 (only after naughty speeds) and an EVO5 that looked heavily modified, i kept up with an EVO 8 FQ300. Motorway by the way, not on twisties lol

Remap with someone you trust and who will use a rolling road as well.

Anyone know these guys.  They are based in the Newcastle area and listed as a Revo Dealer.  The name is misleading as they do offer Petrol Remaps.

....If they're an approved Revo dealer they should be okay. If unsure, phone Revo themselves: 01327 301 901

i have the superchip re-map on my ED30, its very good to be honest ive had many cars chiped, torque curve is brilliant to be honest and im hard to please, so nice to drive so much smoother than standard and much quicker, before superchips remap i had APR chip at awesome GTI, good service really its a free trial it was OK not as smooth as superchips performance wise the same, ive driven martins car a friend of mine who has ED30 with revo chip to be honest its quicker, revo have moved the boost up a notch but not as smooth as superchips cheers stan.

Well bluefin comes in at £599 and the Revo is £760 with a switch to map back to standard.

So question is whether the REVO is worth the extra.

What would you say Stan having driven both???

yeah Stan do tell

tbh i have been put off by the negative comments about superchips re: the level of r&d thats gone into the remap , and that only the boost is turned up?

revo gets good reviews but the agressive boost profile concerns in terms of the clutch !

i just want a well engineered map
thats switchable
has sensible limits that dont go beyond other component limits
and has had lots of R+D behind it.

currently I was going Oettinger as its TUV approved which gives a level of confidence its been done right.
However its lots of £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£
