MK2 1990 8v GTI miles question
« on: 02 November 2007, 19:08 »
I have got my eye on a mk2 golf gti 8v but its got 145k miles on the clock, this seems like a lot, what sort of distance can these engines do without finding major problems ?

Seems like a lot? Not really it's 17 years old so has done less than 10,000 miles a year so it's well below average. These engines if well maintained go on forever. Many see in excess in 200,000 miles with only the expected maintenance.

Agreed, mines done 165k and still going strong. Granted though i've had to spend a fair bit to keep on top of the maintenance.

my mates dad has a 52 reg mondeo that he uses to run to london and back every day and that has 130,000 miles on the clock. Thats a ford so a VW should go for one hell of alot more

Mines on 125k but havent driven it myself yet :embarassed:

my old valver was still going as good as ever on 136k

my 8v has done 160k and is one of the quickest standard 8vs ive driven

my mates 8v is on 180k and that still pulls pretty well although we have ripped that out and are fitting a 2.0 in there

As mentioned though its best to buy a mk2 on its general condition, not the mileage

Worry about the body, not the engine

If I look at a car, I look at the body first. Once the rot gets into it, there is no stopping it without major surgery. Mechanics can always be fixed, either by repair or replacement.
