power steering problems :( what could it be?
« on: 02 November 2007, 14:31 »
ok heres the symptoms, the PS fluid boiled over and some of it came oozing out the top of the reservoir this morning, and now its whining like its got an eaton charger on it. the PS its self is all still working ok at the moment though.
Ive check the belt, its only 2 months old so its in good con, and its still tight, ive checked to see if its leaking from the rack by turning the wheel full lock both ways but nothing from there..
could it be the pump gone and its the bearing thats whining? but then why would it boil over? i don't wanna use it until its sorted so if anyones got any suggestions please help. im just hoping its not the rack

Pure guess work BUT if it's making noise and boiling the fluid over I would say the bearings in the pump are shot, they're getting very hot and causing the fluid to boil.

As Horney said. Mine did the same. Can you feel the PAS working and momentarily not? Also the belt can be too tight and ruin the pump, when you changed it could you hear a new noise like a constant whiney/groan? this was the pump.

I had this when the level dropped too low, it chucked it out everywhere! 1st thing, top it back up and see if it stops.  Use Dexron II ATF from halfords.  Fill it to the max, then turn the wheel to fuill lock both ways a few times, make sure you keep the fluid to the max mark.  This bleeds the system :)

Just a cautionary tail on PAS. My pump died - loss of power steering intemittently. So had it replaced and it was even noisier than the knackered one. So thought it might be a blockage in the old rack so had that and all pipes replaced since did not want old pipes to fall to bits and block new rack. All in all that was £800 - the pump is still noisy - hmph!

It has had ATF and the pukka VW stuff but no difference - I suspect it is a cheap pump from GSF certainly not the VW part (too expensive).

ah ok.  MK2 systems need the bog std Dexron II ATF, this is straight from the mouth of a VW master technician :)
If the noise bothers you I'd be on the lookout for a cheap VW part, Jetta ones are the best to look for as they're more likely to be in good nick!
