hi im considering buying a golf mk3 but i wondered what the difference was between the 1.8se engine and the 2.0gti 8 valve engine? Im more inclinded to the se model as the insurance would be cheaper as im only 19! would it be possbile to get similar power to the gti engine with the 1.8? as on the outside they look the same, isnt the se single point injection and the gti multi point? i thought that was the only difference, can u help me out guys?

regards dan

similar power from a 1.8 is difficult! as the 1.8 has a single point injection engine which will limit tuning options. oh and the se has 4 stud wheels, solid discs, rear drums, oil shockers, single exhaust and the gti has uprated steering, uprated anti roll bars and suspension arms

The GTi is clearly the better one to get, you just got to ask yourself if you want to pay for the extra cost (initial price of car, petrol, insurance).

Well the difference is 0.2 LOL, and that fact, its a GTI, you buy the badge really. The car is what you make of it, your buying the badge, and the right to say you have a gti

What is the 0 - 60 of the 2litre 8 valve just out of interest?

0-100kmh or 62mph is quoted at 10.1seconds and a 1.8 is quoted at 13.2!!
