Alternator wiring

Hi, I have tried looking in Etka, Haynes and the Bently manual to see how the wiring should be setup for it. My alternator has 3 pins on it, and there is no original plug for the loom - its just a crimped wire. There is only 1 wire connected to it, which feeds back to the battery...is this right, or should I have additional ones.

I was having starting trouble - which is probably down to the poor condition of my battery, I jumped the car, ran it for about 25mins with the beams, fan and stereo on, and ran a voltmeter across the battery and it showed 13.1v - which seems pretty unhealthy, I just want to make sure the alt is fine before I replace the battery.

could be the bushes/voltage regulator worn right down..

mine was compeltely flattened out and my battery ahd loads of trouble.. swapped it but then refitting broke the bakelite style insulator so had to switch the alt anyway.. and tis been better since  :smiley:

there should be 2 wires to the alt, a big red one for the battery/starter and a small blue one to the D+ connector.

Yeh, found the blue wire burried under the red one. When I tested the voltage at 13.1v, it was pretty poor. So i removed the battery terminals, got my dremel out and wire brushed the crap out of all the contacts in the engine bay. Afterwards, it showed a nice 13.7 on idle.

Looks like its the battery thats noodled, so a new one will be on the cards soon. I will try some bataid in it again (worked a peach on a dead battery before), then failing that, new one.

does the battery light come on with the ignition, then go out when the car is running?

battery light doesnt really come on / never really noticed it

ok if the battery light don't come on with the ignition then the blue wire isn't hooked up properly, and the alternator will never charge unless you rev over 3-4k :)

i've noticed on mines that the battery light don't come on with the ignition (which it used to), with any luck you've just help solve my problem! :)
