Mk4 Golf GTI drinks oil
« on: 30 October 2007, 13:34 »
I don't understand why I'm using as much engine oil as I think I should.

I do about 1000 miles a month too and from work mostly and fill the engine oil up by about 1 litre every 5 weeks or so. I have it serviced every 10,000 miles and told the car is very clean underneath. I know I'm not loosing engine oil, everywhere is clean dry and oil free, even my mechanic can't pin point it. However it does state in the VW maintenance manual that the car can consume a litre of oil every 1000km's.

I have never had a car that drinks oil as much as me VW

Anyone else know of this VW statement ?

Dan

I'm guessing you have got a 2.0 GTI?  They do seem to use quite a bit of oil. I have to top up our 2.0 much more than my 1.8t

Hi pal, ive got the 2.0, refill the oil about the same as you too. Thats driving nicely about 70% of the time and putting my foot down the other 30%.

Does seem a lot but im sure its just normal for the 2.0.

by the way you enjoyin the car? Love the ride but obviously dosent give you the full Gti feel, bit dissapointed with that really.

Hello mate,

Where to start?

For the first 3 month of owning the car it was fine then started the faults. 1# AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE needed replacing and with diagnostic charges v.a.t and labour £800. 2# RADIATOR. 3# UPSTREAM OXYGEN SENSOR. 4# DOWNSTREAM OXYGEN SENSOR. 5# MAF SENSOR.

Inside the car I find that the center console is a bit creaky and I hate the rubber layer they coat over the plastic components, IE door grabs. Looks crap when you accidentally dig it and flakes away.

Engine sound like its need a 6th gear as the gearing ratio is different to my old Vauxhall Vectra.
Love the blue and red interior lamps.

Build is pretty good.

On the road I'm not a boy racer so speed don't bother me, however I have driven a 150bhp TDI and you can notice the difference. I have not yet floored it on the straight and only had it up to 100mph. I guess it would touch 125 - 130mph depending on the kind of load and conditions.

Whats your experience?

Had my 2.0 for a while now and had no major dramas (touch wood). Just the odd sensor hear and there and the coil packs went too (which go on EVERY Mk4 at some point in time).

Also the 2.0 drinks lots of oil so there is nothing wrong with your oil consumption sounds about right.

Cheers Aland,

Thats reassuring to know about the oil consumption, just bought another 4Litre bottle yesterday.

I had a coil pack go down on my old 20L Vectra one year. I drove from Essex to Reading on 2 cylinders, not to mention I killed the car by doing so plus it drank fuel like I had a hole in the tank.

If it didn't have much left your "low level" oil warning should have come on. As a rule of thumb I check my oil once a month and make sure its nice and topped up. Takes 2 seconds to check and 2 minutes to top up if needed.

Once a month! Should be in your weekly checks.
