Mk2 4 Light Grill Fittings
« on: 29 October 2007, 08:16 »
Hi there,

I'm pretty new to the forum. Been reading for a while, but this is one of my first posts.

I've got myself a mk2 8v GTI (82KW) and it has the standard 4-light red grill. I removed the grill yesterday to notice that the screws that hold the grill into place had been screwed into red wall plugs attached to the framework with masking tape.

This is hardly ideal (since they are now coming loose) and I need a more permanent solution to fix the grill into place. I'm temporarily using cable ties for the time being and although i tried a simple nut and bolt combo, because of all the radiator parts, etc, it was too difficult to get round the back of the frame to hold the nut into place.

There isn't a screw hole in the framework, just a rectangle slit with rounded corners (see diagram below).

I'm not sure what is supposed to fit into that hole (perhaps some kind of clip?), but if anyone would be kind enough to check how their grill screws into the metal-work of the car it would be greatly appreciated. Also if I do require a clip of some kind where would i begin looking to buy one (or two in this case)?

Thanks for your time,

Dave.

Yes, there is supposed to be a little plastic...fixing (can't think of the correct word  ) which clips into that slot, into which the screw goes into

Really really bad picture, but this is kind of what it looks like:

The ones on my car were black plastic, and "twist" into the aperture then the grill screws into a round opening on the end.

Hi Sesterfield.

Thanks for taking the time to check, I think I can visualise what it is that you are describing. I guess now I need to try an locate a couple. It is hard to google something that you can't put a proper name to. :)

I emailed gti-bits, but they don't stock that part. I wonder if it is specific to the car or whether they are widely available in DIY stores? I'll pop into town later and have a look.

Thanks again for your help.

Dave.

Get down your local VW dealership and go to the parts desk. I needed these and they are only a few pence. Much easier than faffing about trying to source something that might work from B&Q.

Thanks Nick, i'll head down there later this week. I had a quick look while in town but couldn't really find anything suitable.

Thanks again,

Dave.

I went to my local VW garage this evening. They are ordering the parts for me and said they should arrive wednesday. As Nick said, they are very cheap (about 27p each).
