Road Noise
« on: 26 October 2007, 00:18 »
Hi Guys and/or Girls..

Have to say the forum looks awesome.. I can see myself getting obsessed..

Basically my problem is as follows:

While driving at around 30-40mph upwards I can hear what can only be described as a "bob-bob-bob-bob-bob" noise coming from the front of the car. The noise is wheel/axle related rather than engine as it's perfectly in time with the wheels going round and gets slightly quieter as I steer either left or right..

I bought the car off a mate who lost his license and admittedly he treated the car like dirt.. It needed new discs, pads, front and back bearings, brake shoes and tyres all round, but I can't seem to pinpoint this damn noise!

I've had a mechanic who lives near me take it for a spin and he reckons it's something to do with the driverside driveshaft, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas?

I'm up for making a video of it, but I really don't know if you'll be able to hear it on the vid, but it really is v. loud..

Any thoughts?

Any help is obviously greatly appreciated

Wheel bearing or CV joint

CV joint (although those usually make noise when turning, not when going straight), jack it up, take the wheel off and have a play around I suppose.  I would suggest wheel bearing or maybe a warped brake disc or something, but you say those are new....

Does it get worse over bumps or anything?  is it definitely totally regular?  I had various banging noises coming from the front of my car when the anti-roll bar was unattached on one side because the linkage broke...  but that was more when going over bumps.

if I had to take a stab at it I'd say either a CV joint, or something is loose and rubbing on a wheel/driveshaft.  Either should be fairly obvious when jacked up with wheel off (leave in neutral so you can turn the wheels...)

Check the tyres. You may have a flat spot or an old puncture repair or some form of damage.

I'm going to have a look at the CV Joint I think.. 1 garage tried to tell me it was the whole right hand driveshaft, but if it's only the CV joint then I'm not going to do anymore than I need to tbh..

re: Mooby - It's a noise which happens all of the time, not just when I'm turning either left or right..

It's defo not the bearings or buckled discs as these have been done.. It's actually getting me down now

How much should I be prepared to pay for a CV Joint? I've had a quote from 2 places for around £30 each atm..

Very sceptical about it being a CV joint. They dont knock all the time unless its about to fall to pieces! They only usually knock when going around bends.

Do the simple things first. This is what i'd do..

Jack it up at the front and rock the wheel to see if there's any movement from top to bottom, if there is then it's the wheel bearing. If not, take it to a small tyre place (not ATS or Kwik Fit) and bung them a fiver to check the wheel balancing. When the guy has the car jacked up and the wheel off tell him you're getting a funny noise and ask if he can see anything wrong with the CV joint ;)

I would say unlikely to be cv joint as you say the noise is quiter steering left or right (same with the wheel bearings too) as the noise would increase as weight is applied to the dodgy side... I would say a trye/wheel fault would be top of my list!! check trye ,balancing and make sure the wheel is bolted on centrally and the hub is smooth and clean where the wheels bolts up...
also trye running the spare on each corner and see if the noise stops...could be a bent wheel!!

This is going to sound crazy, but it's just been fixed!  It was the rear right bearing sleeves which were pressed into the drum were scored..

Had the garage press the old 1's out and I still had the 1's from the bearings I put in a few months ago, so it's all cool!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions..
