Please HELP!!!!! Golf GT TDI
« on: 24 October 2007, 09:19 »
Hi Guy's and Gal's

Can anyone help me with the problem I am having with my Golf?  If it is left more than 24hrs the battery goes flat (which is a bit of a pain - as you can imagine)!!  It has had a new battery and that has tested fine.  All the other bits i.e CL, EW, and Radio work fine.  It won't start from another car only from a start pack (then it starts lovely).

It has been into the garage, and they have put a light thing which was attached to the earth on the battery.  This was very bright when the engine was off so something was draining a lot of power.

They pulled out each fuse and the light stayed bright.  They then thought it may be the ignition switch as when they pulled the large cable off the battery the light went out (but nothing worked in inside the car)!  They then took the ignition switch apart and unplugged the ignition switch but the light was still bright!  They also tried unplugging the starting motor too.

The other problem with it is the driver door switch is not working but I have been told that would not drain enough battery to make it flat.

It is not fitted with a Tracker (someone mentioned they can use battery if the backup battery has worn out)

I would be greatful if anyone has any Idea's!!

THANKS LU.

The door switch will be linked to the 'convenience unit' that, if memory serves me correct, is to do with controlling your interior light, central locking, alarm/immobilizer, sunroof etc.
Have you tried a vagcom scan? Mine sometimes comes up with 'intermittantly open circuit' on two of the doors which I don't think is a problem. It just means that sometimes it takes around 3 button presses to fully open all the doors.
I'm just thinking out aloud here really but if there was a problem with that switch it may be causing your interior light to stay on or short circuiting somewhere or causing something else to operate that shouldn't be. An interior light on for more than 24 hours will almost certainly drain enough from the battery to cause starting difficulties.
I don't think it is possible to disable the convenience unit with one fuse, I'm not even certain that a combination of fuses would help.
I'd start with a vagcom scan and see if that sheds any light.

Hi

Thanks very much for the comment, you are correct the Interior light does not work form the driver door.  I did not really notice this as the lights come on when I unlock the car and also when I stop and take the key out.  But if you open the door the interior light does not come on.  I also noticed the other day the sunroof is being quite temperamental, it only opens after you turn the switch round a couple of times.

I have had the VAGCOM until plugged in but it was one of the older unit's which came up with the door lock problem.  They told me that would not be the cause for the flat battery, but like you say if it is linked to the 'convenience unit' it could well be the answer I am looking for!

Does the new VAGCOM system give more details (they only had the old Blue one)  I know they now have a new USB one which plugs into a laptop.

When you replace the door Switch is the  'convenience unit' separate?  Do you think I would need to replace the 'convenience unit' as well as the switch?

Thanks again so very much for your advice!!!!

I believe the 'convenience unit' is the 'box/computer' that communicates with all the door switches, sunroof, interior lights etc. I hope you don't need to replace it as I would imagine it would be expensive. TBH I would need to read up myself to be able to give you any more info as I haven't had to touch one.........yet :undecided:
Just trying to come up with some ideas as I can't think what else could be causing the problem.

Here are the results from the VAGCOM if anyone can make any sense of them I would be very grateful.

The garage seem to think it is logged from when I have had flat battery in the past??

00532 is interesting: Engine Control Module (ECM) - supply voltage.

Probable cause: Fuse, alternator, battery, current draw with ignition OFF, engine control relay, wiring.

'current draw with ignition OFF' is exactly what you have. Not sure what your next course of action is but if it were me, I would be tempted to test that engine control relay and then the wiring going to and from it.

That's great thanks very much.

After another flat battery, (I could not drive it Sunday as some lovely individual stole my number plates)!! I have booked it in tomorrow to an electical specialist.  I will print off the info you have given and take it in.  I am sure it will save me some pennies!!  Mine is a 1999 GT GTI 110BHP.

I will keep you posted!!

Thanks again

Exactly the same model as mine

Just double checked and all the info is exactly the same as the model I first looked up.
