Just get some plakky bags and use 2-3 inside each other for proper coverage. Then some laccy bands will hold them on well enough.

was gunna use some tin foil, but what do we need to cover?? come on slick

Just the usual electrics, i.e. on mk1-3 the dizzys, ignitions coils, etc. Mk4's well they are mostly plastic covered now, but if you want to be really anal about it, then the spark plugs, as i think the leads to them have coil packs on the leads themselves. The backs of the lights are always good ones to cover too.

have a look on ed38 its recommended by a professional detailer and it even says it in the AutoGlym guide to engine cleaning...

dont take my word for it.. have a read...

i think the electrics would be turned off 

maybe should DC the neg of the abttery to.. otherwise it could short on a constant live
