gti turbo timing belt change

the wifes 2001 turbo (aum) needs the timing belt replacing and at the same time i'm gonna replace the water pump, has anybody took this job on themselves, if yes do i need any locking tools for the cams.
Any tips on the procedure would also come in handy. I have replaced belts before but they were on mk2 golfs and bmw e30's.

i did mine my self. theres marks to line up on 1 of the camshafts the other camshaft is driven by chain so youve only got to line up 1 pully i think its the exhaust. i couldnt find a mark or lock pin hole on the crackshaft so i marked it myself with tipex but i dont fink your surposed to do that  :grin: and to untensoin the belt you have to scew a bolt in the tension with a washer on it to untension the belt not sure wot size it is tho. the thing that p***ed me off the most was removing the engine mount doesnt seem enougth room to get it out  :angry: but it will come out eventaully. sorry i cant be more help.

cheers for that,
 just bought a haynes manual and says bolt for the tensioner is a m5 threaded bar which you put a washer and  nut on and wind it down, and no locking tool is required for the cams.
 Bring on the grazed knuckles !!!

sod it, rang the local vw dealer and they are doing a deal at the minute of £275.00 inc vat to fit timing belts and its an extra £75 for the water pump to be fitted, so its booked in for friday, saves my knuckles...

why are they charging you an extra £75 for the water pump?? Water Pump is no more than £35 and it should be no more in terms of labour as its only three / 4 bolts i believe!

i'd get it down a local garage, as you can get the lot done with genuine parts for about £220 and its not like you can mess the cam belt up, it either works or it doesn't

and if it doesnt then your looking handreds and hundreds to fix lol, i wouldnt take to the stealer though!! rip offs they have the belt off anyway and yes its a matter of a couple of bolts. :laugh:

yeah, sounds like they are augmenting their admitedly cheap deal of timing belt change with an outrageously expensive (and I suspect heavily pushed) extra....

does the timing belt replacement price include the idler and tensioner or just the belt?
