URGENT! mk2 8v gti cam clamp!
« on: 22 October 2007, 10:11 »
righty then people, following an eventful weekend, managed to snap a cam clamp on my gti when replacing the cam...

been told by the local euro-car parts that they are only available with the cylinder head and that other than getting a second hand one, thats what i'd have to buy...

so, i need a second hand one asap! can anyone help me out? its the fourth one from the cam belt!, and i dont mind buying a set of 4 if thats all there is, but i seriously need this asap!

can anyone help me out please?!

thanks,

rob

looking like thats the plan tbh...

rang a scrap yard in sheffield called wilf jays... now bare in mind i've been there and seen an 8v mk2 with its engine minus the g/b in, he insists its not there, and even if it wasnt then he wouldnt split it... so guess im just gonna have to go and rob it from them instead... hate people like that! failing that, then i guess its looking for a 2nd hand cylinder head and stripping that and weighing it in...

i think the cam caps are specific to the head, so cant really be replaced! how did you snap one!!

rushing tbh, was mega late and was sushing to get it all back together, and it just clicked, then snapped. nearly cried!

i know they are specific, but i just need one that will do for now, just until i have the time to sort it all out propperly.

cant be massive amounts of difference!

im not sure how critical it is tbh, but you have to think the speed the cams gonna be spinning, if the cap holds it even slightly off centre its gonna cause problems!

The cams caps are indeed specific to the cylinder head they came from as they are machined from blanks on the head and are to pretty tight tolerances ie if a second hand replacement was fitted it could cause either the cam not to rotate at all or a tight spot for the cam and wouldnt last, im afraid you are looking at a replacement head rather than just the cap

There all right about the caps. specific to head and to a certain extent, the cam

i have a reconditioned 8v head and im local (ish) to you in Derby

its been cleaned, skimmed, and valve stem seals done but not guides because they were ok, with all caps and new elring stretch bolts

was done at a reputable engineering shop that  most derby garages use for head replacement

let me know

alrighty pal, how much would you be wanting for it?

having said all the above, i still went ahead with fitting the second hand cap, and fired her up (fair amount of steam came out of the zorst but im putting that downt to the rocker cover being off over night and the new cam-shaft...

anyhoo, left it running a little and sounded ok. so i popped off the rocker, took the new cap off and checked for any signs of irregular wear and seemed ok... also offered it upto the orininal and it looked to be exactly the same.

anyway. the noise i was thinking that could be the tappets, my dad suggests might be the bottom end... which aint good. will keep you posted cos its going down to the local garage to get they're opinion.

fingers crossed its not gonna cost too much.

thanks for the warning thogh people, as ever, very helpful and considerate!
