The washer will be the sump plug washer, always nice to put a new one on.

Just empty it out, usually when warm helps. and put the other stuff in, should be fine, remember to fill the filter and put a skim of oil around the seal.

i hoped I'd work out what the washer was along the way but thanks loads for the help

i presume you fill the filter to remove all the air from it? or is there another reson?

i've never bothered filling the filter but definately put a smear round the o-ring. if you want to runa engine flush through first it won't do any harm.....
