Synta is 10/40W and thats what VAG use. I run mine on 5/40 but then mine is silly tuned. and gets a regular oil change.

4litres is the correct amount if you are changing the oil filter.

Use a proper VW oil filter - they are £2 or £4, I can't remember which.

ONLY use the 10/40 stuff in your GTi (unless you've done something very special to the engine). I have a 143bhp 8v and I only use the big silver bottled stuff sold at the dealerships. Its cheap and good sh!t.

I used to use poncy Castrol GTX etc which is proper expensive, but not as good - for this particular engine. I noticed the difference in smooooooooothness when I swapped.

15/40 is a bit thick in my opinion, maybe and only maybe would I use it if I had tappet noises or had done mega 200,000+ miles. Although, we do use this oil in our Mk1 GTi.

Change your oil and oil filter every 10,000miles, which should be done anyway when you service it every 10,000miles. (I change my oil about every 5000miles as I'm a bit anal about these things!)

I agree with all the above, but I'll just add that if you have a very high mileage car (esp an 8v) then it will be worthwhile using 15w/40.  Just with engine being worn the thicker oil might quiet it down a bit.

The only bit of the *w/40 the engine cares about once its warm is the '40'. When the engine is at normal operating temperature a 15w/40 is no thicker than 10w/40. The 10 & 15 only relate to the oil viscosity when it is cold, ie a 10 is thinner than a 15 so in winter you're better off with the 10w because it 'gets around the engine' quicker and in summer a 15w will be fine. A 10w/40 is more expensive than a 15w/40 because it is more difficult to produce not because it is better.  'w' stands for winter. Unless your engine is worn just use what the manufacturer states, if you know its 'slack' consider an oil with a larger second figure such as a *w/45 or *w/50

As slick said 10/40w is the right oil for engine. They are different grades to use but that depends on how severe weather is. Ours is just normal so 10/40w is right.

Got my oil and filter this morning, the guy also sold me some washer type thing that he said i needed

Is it worth my while flushing it out with anything before i refill with 4L of the good stuff (synta silver 10/40) and if so can anyone recommend anything in particular?

My oil is pretty black and pretty low so it must be well gunked up in there!
