rusty arch help needed
« on: 07 March 2004, 21:44 »
I lost my other plastic trim tday :( only to find that it had been glued on with some nasty white glue stuff.  It had been glued on because the whole arch is rusty as hell.  I'm absolutely gutted, what sort of nutcase would glue a plastic arch trim over a rusty arch anyway??  So now i'm left with a problem.  One big rusty arch.
What I want to know is, is this common on mk 2's?  How do I go about fixing it and how much would it probably cost?  Sorry but I'm an absolute novice this is my first golf.  I love her to bits and want everything on her to be right.  Someone please give me some advice.  Thank you
regards
Marc

you don't say front or rear.
the fronts are easier as it's a bolt on affair, but the rears will have to done by a bodyshop.
a genuine wing from VW will set you back ?70 inc VAT. I'd advise strongly to get a genuine one as I've heard horror stories of ill fitting ones that looks totally sh!te.
I had a vent put in my genuine wing at the same time after I discovered the same rust as you. It'll set you back anything between ?200-?300 depending on how good your 'shop is, etc. Just for a rough guide.

hope that helps.

oh, venom sell the vents. about ?35 after VAT and P&P. 2 styles availible. Mine's the T4 style. The other is the sprinter. 3 slits.

I don't know about rear arches. I haven't had mine done yet as they weren't as bad as the front one.

you're going to have to get a bodyshop to take a look at the rears. it involves cutting the old one off and welding in the new one.

Hmmmm contemplating maybe even just getting g60 arches put on but I spose thats just gonna cost me a fortune.  I'll get in touch with a bodyshop but I remember when I once took my (dare I say it?) Clio to a bodyshop because of a rusty arch he told me to naff off and get rid of it coz it wasnt worth repairing lol

the G60 part is only the plastic. they're just wider, so you can cut more of the wing away underneath. you're still looking at ?200 for the set, skirts and fixing bits though.

My girlfriend has got in touch with one of her old school friends who does welding.  He said he'll have a look at it and see what he can do but that wont be until the weekend.  Apparently he took a rusty shell of a mk 1 astra (sorry he's a vauxhall man) and turned it into something that looked brand new so I have a lot of faith in the guy.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.  Hopefully I should be able to get him to do it for thirty quid or summat :)
