I LOVE MY GOLF SO PLEASE HELP!!!
« on: 13 October 2007, 19:26 »
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!?? I have a Golf MK3 P reg 96 model, i have had it for a week and it is causing me so many problems.
first of all the heater has been bypassed and the MOT report says it could possibly be leaking, (could it be that the thermostat has been taken out). Also the control knob for switching  between hot and cold air has been locked. i have had a look behind the controls and thought it was a fault with the cog not being in place. However after getting the cog in the right position, after endless attempts i later realised its not just that. The cable that is pulled by the knob is very tight and every time the cog is put into place and the heat control turned on it just comes out of place again!! (could something be missing, or has someone tighten the heat control cable??)
Secondly the central locking has also given up. The doors are now not being looked from one side...is there a fuse for the central locking??
please can someone help as I have more problems with my lovely golf but cannot go on for ever....
thanks

Heater controls sound as if its all been bodged and locked off! prob a lot of work to get it back.

Central locking - when you say one side do you mean using the key in one lock will make all of then lock?
Do you have an after market alarm/immobiliser or factory? Maybe just a new battery in the fob???

cental locking is probably a motor which has gone

as for heater control, take it to a garage and let them sort it if its doing your nut in, sounds a bizzare thing does that anyway??

The central locking is controlled by an air pump in the boot. There are no other motors!

As lensblue said, the central locking is in the boot right infront of the drivers side brake light in sort of a grey polystyrene box. Is the central locking activated by a fob? If so it may be a battery. If it's not a VW alarm then it could be a relay gone. If you use the key, is it just spinning in the lock? If it is it's part of the mechanism inside the handle broke. I have spares of these if you need. If you use the key to lock and unlock and the key doesn't just spin then it could be a split hose on the locking pump system. If you unlock with a key and it doesn't turn at all then the lock is nailed or the lock has been changed at some point and you don't have the right key!

As for the heater problem...

the only reason I can think of as to why the heater would be locked onto hot is to remove heat from the engine more if it's overheating possibly due to blown head gasket. Worth checking under the oil filler cap and under the engine coolant expansion cap for signs of any mayo type mankyness. Also when driving, the temp guage on the far left of the dials should work it's way upto half way and stay there. If it goes over then it's overheating. Also check for loss of coolant and oil
