Dunlops - directional?
« on: 12 October 2007, 16:26 »
Shortly after I took delivery of my GTI, I noticed a scratch on one of the alloys. The dealer was pretty good about it, and said that they were due to get a demonstrator in with 18" Monzas, so the best thing to do would be to swap the wheels over when it arrived.

That happened today, and call me naive, I rather assumed that I would keep my original tyre! Anyway, the left front is now a Dunlop (sigh), with the others Michelin - but I've noticed an arrow on the side of the tyre, and if it's supposed to be direction of travel, then it's pointing the wrong way!

Does anyone know whether the GTI Dunlops are directional tyres?

The Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on my ED30 are certainly directional, with all the arrows pointing in the direction of travel. I'd go back to the dealer and get them to put the original tyre back on the new Monza.

For sure, get the dealer to put your Michelin back on, I cannot understand why they would create the problem of two cars with mis-matched tyres, total clowns I guess!

Thanks guys, I've just got off the phone with the dealer - they will swap the tyres tomorrow!

Technically, they left me with a month-old car that wouldn't pass an MOT - not good.........

Yes, they are directional. See here:

This is a schoolboy error and should be rectified immediately. I would take it straight back to the dealer (or better still have them trailor it) as to drive it in this condition and have an accident would invalidate your own insurance.

Shocking

Phil: Good guess - but actually I would still recommend the dealer even though the wheel change didn't entirely go to plan!

It's all sorted out now, the dealers were suitably apologetic and bent over backwards to put things right. They gave me absolutely faultless service up until then, and although this was a big one, c*ck ups happen - it's more important what they do to put things right!

Thanks everyone for your advice - I now have a 4-michelin car with all tyres pointing the right way and without a single mark on any of the Monza II's!

They sweetened me up a bit by giving me an R32 to tryout while it was done - very nice, very different, but I'm still really pleased that I bought the car I did!

Good result and a balanced opinion of the dealer.

Glad to hear you are on Michelins as the Dunlops are very noisy. I have just emailed Dunlop UK to complain about mine. Watch this space
