Super charging a a Digi 8v - what's the score?
« on: 10 October 2007, 15:36 »
This is me dreaming really as I don't the funds but it's something that appeals to me on so many levels. What I want to know is how is this achievable? G60 lump and bits would seem the most straight forward but pricey and hard to get hold of. What about the Mini Cooper S Eaton charger? THere are loads on eBay, does anyone do a kit to fit these? Surely all that's needed is an inlet manifold, mounting brackets, a pully system, lower compression and Mega Jolt/Mega Squirt to get the fuel air and timing bob on.

Easiest is to fund a lump that has all the compression ratios 8:1 spot on (1H) then source a charger for it, becuase you will just end up rebuilding a whole engine from a 8v point of view! A G60 ECU will be more than enough to cope with the engine management no need for expensive after market ones.
Then you have to think about whole running gear mate like brakes, clutch, gear box etc.

Here is a link to chaps who love there G60's if your heart is set on a conversion.

Cheers bud. Mega Jolt and Mega squirt are both home brew options on the timing fuel front so are cheap in comparison to the off the shelf stuff. I'm musing really as to how this may be achieveable on the cheap. Compression can easily be dropped with a little head work, brakes are easy to sort and I reckon unless you run silly boost the standard box will be fine, should just need an uprated clutch.

Anyhoo I shall have a read of that link tonight and see what I can find out.

Dude, I have KILLED two VAG boxes on standard output engines. you will kill an 020 box and/or the 8v driveshafts, easy

G60 lump with ecu etc typically around the 1k mark.

It sounds really easy, but reliability is a clear issue when you swap out to do a bit of head work or bottom end for that matter. Most companies CNC the bores and renforce valves springs and plus the conrods are bigger on a G to cope with the compression and detonation cycles. If it was that easy fella I would have done this to my first golf 10 years ago, but like Organisys has said buying and dropping a G60 engine is the easiest way you might get a G60 engine for £500 £600, but then finding a G-lader will set you back another possible £300-£500 depending upon spec of charger.
You can find a 9a Audi 2ltr pre bored engine of or a KR or PG and start getting power from there a bit more reliable and cheaper than G route.

Thanks guys, all interesting stuff and exactly what I was after. Cheaper option would seem to be to get the g0 lump and then convert to an Eaton charger as they're cheaper to get and rebuild.

It's all pipe dream anyway, I can't even afford to change my knackered shocks at the moment but it was one of those crazy DIY thoughts I get while having my mid morning dump at work!

Check this out Nick..... But as you can see, nuff $$$

http://www.bahnbrenner.com/vw_audi/BBM_Supercharger_Kits/BBM_Supercharger_Kit__Lysholm__MkII_1_8L_Digifant_II.html

An ABF 2.0 16v lump from a mk3 golf, SEAT Ibiza etc might be a chaper route to more power, while still be reasonable economical and will give a reliable 150+ bhp, more with cams etc.

Cheers intresting reading and not that expensive with the current exchange rate.

By the way did you go across the Madjeski junction today at around 5:00pm? I'm sure I spotted you in the distance.
