Steering problem
« on: 09 October 2007, 16:47 »
a few weeks ago i pulled out of a junction and the steering went really heavy, almost impossible to move the steering wheel, only for a few seconds and then went. I didnt really think anything of it ... thought that i might not have given it enough revs. Today however with all the rain today it happened about three times again, pulled out of a junction and the steering completely locked up (nearly went into the verge opposite). i pulled really hard down on the steering wheel to get back straigh on the road and the car screetched really loudly.

does anyone know what i could be? powersteering going maybe? I dont want to be driving along at speed and it decides to lock up  :undecided:

any help would be much appreciated,

thanks

Sounds like the belt has some slack in it. Replace the belt, or if there's enough tension room left in the belt tensioner, tighten it up as per the Haynes manual.

i'd agree with slack on the belt, and also like to add during the wet conditions, any spray from the road etc is likely to make the problem of the belt slipping much worse.

there is a belt shield that can help in the wet, but it shouldn't slip unless the belt is worn or slack.  Check the ETKA parts thread for a list of everything you need to fit a splash guard.  Keep an eye out for Jettas in the scrappy, they seem to have the splash shields fitted even if they dont have PAS, thats where mine came from

I had the same problem, but only in the wet and when the puddles were big enough to splash under the right hand side of the car (drivers side) so the conclusions I came to was power steering belt.  I am going to try and get a splash guard sorted and also need to get all the belts changed as she has 108k on the clock, cambelt, fan belt, power steering etc, and also all the fluids I guess at the same time.
