another one cutting out!!
« on: 05 March 2004, 20:50 »
Hi Folks

I know this has been posted loads before but My MK3 1995 8V has cut out twice this week, both times while car was idling (not while coming down to idle) it seemed to shudder slightly and then die, throttle body seems ok, all plugs and leads are fine, what do you think change relays if so which one or ones first?

Cheers Guys

Go for changing relay No. 30 first - (ecu relay).
I have just been through this whole process with a cutting out problem and have got to the stage where I know it is most likely to be the crank speed sensor. It has cost me ?215 in relays and a new distributor though, and I still have the problem!
Start with replacing the cheaper bits first, dizzy & crank sensor will both be about ?200 inc fitting! relays go for ?10 - ?15.
A throttle boddy clean would proably help, or a few tanks of Optimax= if you are lazy like me!

Your friendly local VW main stealer will probably be the only place to get one, apart from the scrappy (which is a false economy).
I have lost the part no. I had scibbled down for mine, but the safest way is to whip the relay out of the fuse box (located above the fuses up in the dash virtually, in a really tricky-to-get-to place) take it in with you and they can match it exactly.
Should cost ?15 at most.
