Quality of GTI is ok, but not more.

If R36 looks like the Mk6 Golf that is being tested on the roads, and which has no character to its exterior whatsoever, and looks like a Fiat Stilo, I wouldn't give a rat's bottom about its performance characteristics...

Besides, the best looking R-model Golf is the first generation of R32. The current R32 with its middle-placed exhaust looks bulky and has a really lardy azz.

It just looks like the front end has changed and the back aswell....nothing much of a difference

when they exchange the underlying A3 platform for Fabia platform, you may notice the difference...
and it does not look like a Golf anymore, looks like a Fiat

My betting is on the Golf Mk6 not coming to the UK until September 2008 and consequently the GTI won't follow for about another 12 months, so late 2009. Anyone with any sense will let the production settle for about a year before ordering.

Cheaper factory production doesn't necessarily mean a poorer quality car - It means better factory production cost efficiency. The VW brand cannot afford to drop its standards.

Autocar says the MKVI golf is due on our shores in January 2009 :undecided:

My bet goes with the usual Launch at the Geneva motorshow next year

GTI MKVI by January 2010

R32/36 ......probably never if they look at the way the "greenies" are attacking big block cars with high CO2 emissions. My bet would be with a high output 4WD 2.0TFSI at 300bhp @300lb/ft   with suspension based on the Audi TT with the lighter alloy parts and magnetheoric dampers......well we can all hope.
