Oil top up

Would I be right in saying that I need a 17mm allen key to open the nut just above the vw cover plate.Iwent into 3 differnt tool shops last week and none of them had that size.Was also looking for a 14mm for the Fiat at home.Just want to top up the oil and Im afraid to take out the speedo cable.Thanks.

yep it's a 17mm, managed to pinch one out of my dads toolbox  (god knows why he had one that size!)

halfords sell them, thats where I got mine anyway!
its the type that fits onto a 3/8 ratchet iirc

EDIT: it is a 17mm hex key that fits onto a 3/8'' rathet, just to be clear.

3/8 is what I wanted to hear.Spoted one in work earlier,might have to disappear.Tried in Halfords aswell ,no joy.Not very helpfull in one of the branches over here in Ireland.Thanks

To get out of a jam, I have used a 17mm bolt, fitted two 17mm nuts to the thread and jammed them together. Then inserted the bolt head into said allen fitment, and turn it out on the two nuts.
Does not always work, but in my case, it did.
