drilled air box?

hey,

i see that alot of you drill the air box to get that nice induction sound and a little exrta power ...

I have a '90 driver ... stupid question but if i wanted to drill my air box where exactly would i do it? how may holes etc?

A drilled airbox is something generally done to a gti where the airbox is mounted by the inner wing on the drivers side. This takes advantage of the fact there is plenty of cool air available through the cut-out in the inner wing. HOWEVER on a 1.6 driver the airbox is on top of the engine so drilling would be a waste of time and would probably decrease power due to drawing all the hot air straight from the engine. If all your intake ducting is present then your intake should be clipped onto the inner wing over the cut-out I mentioned earlier.
I would say don't mess with it.

thing is my car overheats really easily ... is there anything i can do about it?

When you say overheats I guess you mean the temp gauge goes right up on the dash???

How far does the gauge go upto?
Does the radiator fan kick in?

Gonna have to correct you there mate, when on the move the air temp in the engine bay will be almost identicle to that outside. Only when stationary does the bay temperature start to rocket up as there's no airflow through it. Drilling your air box will improve flow rate into your carb but make sure the holes are drilled on the right side of the box so the air still has to pass through the filter.

the radiator fan kicks in every journey ... usually every 15mins ... its ok when moving but when you pull off from traffic lights say it make a horrble grinding noise
