A drilled airbox is something generally done to a gti where the airbox is mounted by the inner wing on the drivers side. This takes advantage of the fact there is plenty of cool air available through the cut-out in the inner wing. HOWEVER on a 1.6 driver the airbox is on top of the engine so drilling would be a waste of time and would probably decrease power due to drawing all the hot air straight from the engine. If all your intake ducting is present then your intake should be clipped onto the inner wing over the cut-out I mentioned earlier.
I would say don't mess with it.
