occasional smoking

today i was reinflating my rear tyres when i noticed that every now and then it is chucking out a puff of whiteish grey smoke
so what i need to know is what is causing the smoke cheers
car is a 1989 8v gti pb engine head gasket and stem seals done about 8 months ago

If you have replaced the valve stem seals, then the valve guides themselves could be worn, or the seals were not fitted all the way over the guides. If you have constant smoke then you could have an engine breathing problem or worst case scenario, something wrong with your pistons. If the smoke is actually steam, then I would look in your breather and oil filler cap for a light brown sludge. The head gasket could be on its way again. Did you have the head skimmed last time? The cause of going through head gaskets could be a slightly warped head.

head was skimmed and pressure tested but i remembered that when i fitted the stem seals one of the springs that goes round the top of the seal came off but i got it back on
also it is only chucking out a puff of smoke every 10-20 seconds or so
