Whats your favourite GTI  illyun Mki, Mkii 8v or 16v?

Mk2 16v     followed closely by Mk1/Mk5 GTI... the Mk3 8v is  and the Mk4 1.8t is even worse unless chipped and suspension upgraded then it would good.

Crikey I thought I was bad for changing cars, if you don't mind me asking but why do you have so many in 1 year? Big family?

Nope, just me, wife and toddler.....  I just get bored easily and I went through a phase where I was constantly looking for better condition and lower mileage Mk1's and Mk2's... My wife persuaded me to buy the Mk5 GTI in 2006 when I really had no intention of buying until 2007 - glad I listened to her though   I tried the R32 for 4 months before the Ed30 just to see what it was like. Had to sell the Ed30 due to unplanned and unforseen house purchase and investment.... etc... But I am happy with what I have now and 2008 -2010 will be very quiet years on the car buying front.  If my finances are really good then I might buy a 2nd hand Mk5 DSG R32, drive it for 6 months and then sell it... I also harbour fantasies about buying a Porsche 911, driving it for a year and selling it at about the same price I paid for it... ditto Ferarri F355.... but I am planning on being in Jordan for long periods of time from Dec08 or Feb09 probably 8 months a year, coming back for the summers for 5-10 years - my wife and daughter are there already... So the Ed30 will probably get 30-35k miles put on it in the next 16-18 months and then be garaged away for quite a while.  Its probably the last Golf GTI I will buy for a long long time if ever again.  Unless the Mk6/7 GTI is something really special and radical - even more so than the Mk5 - which I somehow doubt will happen.

mk2 golf driver - paid 750, sold for 700
mk2 golf gti 8v - paid 1700 crashed it, lost everything!
mk2 jetta gti 16v paid 450, spent nearly 1.5k so far, still crap, still got it.
mk2 golf gti 8v (early)- paid £50 sold for 250
mk2 golf gti - paid 280 sold for 375
mk2 golf 1.3 - paid 200, using as a daily while the jetta gets projected.

so that a total of £4930 paid and 1325 made back.
none of that includes tax or insurance costs or general running like tyres etc.

not as impressive as some but bear in mind its all done on a student budget with bar time barkeep wages

Profit?      I was sensible however, about buying and selling my cars and always always tried to sell for what I bought wrt the Mk1s and Mk2's but lost £4k on my first Mk5 GTI but did 15k miles in it in 6 months -sold it in a hurry as I was getting the R32, lost £2k on my R32 but did 12k miles in 4 months, lost 5.5k on my Ed30   and only had it 2 months but did 8k miles in it    Bl00dy hell.. just realised why I'm always broke     The only older car that I lost big money on was the Mk2 G60 Syncro which came as a shock to me - lost £2k on that car.  The others all cancelled each other out as I made small losses on some cars, broke even on others and made some on other - record was a Mk2 16v on which I made £1k (apart from the Mk3 8v in 2004 but that was my daily drive and I did 30k miles in 18 months losing £1.5k in the process).
