New GTi owner, Need advice on electrics please.

Hello got my first 1986 mk2 Gti yesterday, paid £100 for her so not the best condition, but will be warm for winter as i am an aircooled head in summer.
Took the dash out today to fix a few faults which i did but cannot trace this one.......

It has the optional aircon (not working) but when ever i switch the slider along to say windscreen etc the radiator fan kicks in can you please tell me if this is this normal ?

If not whats wrong, it's beaten me.

  wow an 86 with aircon! Sounds like its been butchered somewhere along the line of many owners? The sliders only control mechanical cables that pull/push on the air flaps and heater pipe! No electrics involved apart from the fan in footwell of passenger side under glove box.

The air con looks factory fitted and with the dash out i can see three wires coming from the right hand rear of slider which allow interior fan to operate when slider is not in off position trouble is it also operates rad fan  which im sure should not happen. Have removed old alarm system and re-wired stereo now wiring looks fine but still got this odd fault.
