big bumpers
« on: 23 September 2007, 19:26 »
hey guys and gals,

i know some of you disagree with the whole, "making a non gti look like a gti" but i had a right find today. i was in kwikfit with my dad, as he was getting a new back box and tyres for his car, and i got chatting to the man behind the counter about his mk2. we got talking about the brakes, and he said hes got a set of calipers and carriers at home that i can have to do a conversion. he said they were almost new (which they are) and i could have them for £60. after more talking i managed to get a set of big bumpers and arches and skirts and a set of 16v rear lights, all for £120, which i thought was a right bargain.

now to get to my point. i have the arch set which came off the big bumper mk2, but i dont want to change over the arches if there is no need. so is there a need to take off the plastic arches and skirts off my driver model, or are they the same? i dont mind changing them over if it will look better, but dont want to if there is no need.

another question, how hard is it to wire in the fog lights on the big bumpers? as the switch is 2 stage, and need to wire it in to that.

sorry for the long post but any help will be appreciated

cheers

The driver is a GTI without the GTI engine, so the arches should be the same. As for wiring in the foglamps, the two position switch, as I am sure you will know is for front and rear fog lamps. This should not be to much of a problem as long as you have the wiring diagram, so that you can use the proper power source. Without actually doing the job myself, the advice I can give you is limited, but probably like me, once you get into it, you should be able to achieve it.

the only thing i saw different with the arches was that on the front, the plastic on the arch seemed to wrap under the bumper, but it doesnt on my current arches, and i didnt know if this was visible?

big bumper model arches are different as they go behind the bumper. and the side mouldings on driver models are wider then gti so the little pice which comes of the arches will be different unless your changing the door mouldings

mine was small bumper non arched non side skirts. the door trims wa diff .they just pull off tho

as for the fog lamps i had a problem fitting the bumper on my 1600. the bk ov the fogs was hitting my valance (gti,s)must be different. i had to remove the lights bk and leave the glass still on its brackets hence still looks like there intact

You need to remove the lower valance when fitting big bumpers!

so would it be possible to fit just the front arches then, or are they different? and change the door trims?

If you want it all lined up as if it had left the factory like that then you will need all 4 arches and the thin 90-spec side trim.
