DSG GTI - questions from newbie
« on: 22 September 2007, 20:58 »
I have just bought a DSG GTI.  It's a great car but there are a few things that I am struggling with and I am hoping that some of you can help me out.

First, hill starts.  I thought that the car held for a moment after you take your foot off the brake so there is no need to use the handbrake. My wife tried this out on a steep hill but the car rolled back quite a bit.

Second, the car has a multi-function steering wheel and although I think that I have got to grips with the normal computer functions (1 and 2), I don't know what the file symbol does.  I have looked in the manual but am confused.  I have heard that you can fiddle with various settings like the coming home lights but haven't a clue where to start.

Third, how do I connect a mobile phone up to the system.  With the buttons on the steering wheel, does it mean that the car is ready for a phone connection?  Is it a dealer job or could I take it somewhere like the Carphone Warehouse?  Can it be done without drilling holes in the dash?

Sorry about all the questions but any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Regarding the Multi Function Steering Wheel, or MFSW, the file symbol allows you to select which menu you want to access. Selecting radio allows you to scroll/select radio stations or CD tracks depending on which audio source you're listening to. The next menu takes you to the instant mpg/average mpg/distance travelled etc. display. In this menu, hitting the OK button allows you to toggle between the two memories, 1 and 2. The third menu takes you to the set-up menu where you can for example set door locking options, follow me home headlight settings and so on. Note that the third menu is disabled when you're on the move for obvious safety reasons. Each time you press the file symbol, it cycles through the 3 menus.

Alan

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly

It seems there is something wrong with my file button.  I can scroll through the normal computer readings on 1 & 2 using the other buttons but pushing the file button does not select other menus.

The car is in the dealer on Tuesday so will mention it

Thanks again

Regarding hill starts, I read a few posts in the U.S. about cars with DSG rolling back on steep hills, something to do with DSG not being a standard automatic gearbox (thank God).  I opted for the Hill Hold option (£70).  This holds the car for a few seconds after you take your foot off the brake.  I've never tested a DSG car on a hill without Hill Hold but I guess from what you've said, if the hill's steep enough they can roll backwards.  Should be plenty of people on here that can confirm that though.

....I didn't know you could spec a Hill Hold option - I thought it was standard. My '06 build GTI doesn't roll back unless the incline is extremely steep and then it only needs gentle throttle to overcome it. I certainly didn't order the "Hill Assistant" and think it's standard with DSG. I never ever use the handbrake except when parking - No need.

Re MFSW - Highline or Midline Computer? They offer different functions.

Thanks for all the helpful tips.

What's the midline computer, never heard of that.  If you have that, does it mean that the file button doesn't work, but on the highline it does?

I'll have to check mine - I've got Midline (and should have ordered Highline )

Hadn't thought of that - I've got highline, but it's possible that the menu options are limited with the smaller midline display.

Hill start assistance - only needed in America

Maybe the file button only works when you have an MP3 cd/ipod attached? (I would think anyway)
