Spring Sizes???
« on: 22 September 2007, 15:56 »
After the worst 24hrs of my life with problems that have happened with my car im finally getting round to sorting it!

I got some spings of gaybay and was told there of a mk3 Gti 2.0 same as mine.

So i had the set of 35mm springs fitted to my Gti but theyve fallen off the cup on the top of the strut as the springs are too wide in diameter.
Sooo i have this horiable twanging noise from the springs when i steer as they arent moving on the bearings!!

Dangerious you say?? Very!

Can any1 explain how the spring sizes vary from old/new mk3's??

Ive ordered a new set of koni springs 35mm which are meant to be for all mk3's!

Im stumped coz the springs ive got on now are off a mk3!?

Front springs changed in 94/95 to a 65mm pigtail....older one's use an 80mm pigtail and only fit if you swap the spring cup's and top mount's

Read your other posts.  Sounds a nightmare

Who fitted your springs?

For tracking, MOT etc I find Dock tyres (might be Dexel now) on Eastgate very good.  For MOT they are thorough but dont go looking for work

ha ha yeah simon, had a right weekend.
At the moment golfs sat outside mine waiting for a new set of koni springs to be delivered that i ordered saturday.

Got a guy called colin who works next to S & D's to fit them, he seams a good guy working from his dads garage.

To be honest even only driving the car over the weekend with these new springs on im glad to be getting some koni's.

Il have to let you know how i go on bud....

Dude, welcome to my world, I posted about this ages ago and got no help.

Basically, I also contacted VW and a bunch of places and they all new sweet FA. They said the only way you can tell is when the springs are off the car

As brad says they fitted 1 spring type on early MK3 then changed, I thought I bought the right type but they were wrong so I had to get new retaining cups for the springs

The mechanic who fitted my new springs was sound about the whole thing, just told me what was wrong and what he needed

Trust me once they are on you will be a lot happier

The koni's i ordered are meant to fit a mk3 upto 10/1997 which my car was reg'd on the 8/1997 so fingers crossed they should be right :undecided:

But with the luck ive had....if these koni's dont fit, are the cups and mounts expensive?

And what model golf should i be looking at for the right size cups?

be glad when its all sorted, just wanna go for a drive in her dropped
