modification idea - not sure if it's possible
« on: 21 September 2007, 12:50 »
been thinking about what to do to my golf, it's a gt tdi, been sat thinking, does anyone think it would be possible to fit a second turbo? i'm not sure about how cars run with twins apart from they kick in at different stages to give a greater power through the rev range, i'm guessing that it would involve a full ecu re-map to get the fueling right and a hell of a lot of work just wondering if it would actually be possible or not

anyone any ideas?
a work in progress......someday i might think i'm happy with a car....maybe

so far: 40mm Gmax lowering kit, upper and lower S3 strut braces, pipercross panel filter, Smoothed air box and 18" Audi R8 reps

not heard of one being done to be honest; you're thinking along the lines of a BMW unit aren't you? with the smaller and larger turbo?

i reckon it will be a lot of ball ache for not much gain; you're better off fitting uprated injectors and a hybrid turbo; should see well over 250bhp :afro:

what model you got at the moment?

it's just a 130, though being re-mapped to around 170 soon - i havn't had it too long just thinking about what to do with it

i actually got the idea from talking to a friend about his supra, totally different set-up i'm guessing but made me think and then i heard of someone breaking a twin turbo and it put the idea back in my head, i've never heard of it being done to a golf or a diesel thinking about it and was thinking about if it could be done

i'm just awkward and like trying things no-one else has done and like having something unique

plus last time i looked into hybrids it was about 6months pay for one - unless they've become alot cheaper?

probably do able but, would be more money that its worth as you would need shed loads of custom work done and to be fair its not really worth it as the turbos kick in quite low as it.

your best bet for more power is;

re-map, manifold and exhaust, intercooler, turbo, injectors.

does exhaust work actually do something to a tdi then because i always thought it was not much use because of how diesel engines run

hmmm, after looking at that site a large front mounted intercooler looks nice then sit and play with boost presures and charge coolers if needed

Possible yes, but completely pointless on a diesel. Unless its a V tdi with one blower for each bank.

why pointless?

would it not work in the same way as a petrol twin? as one starts to fade the other fires up and gives a greater power band?

so instead of working from 1500-3500 it could run through to higher rpms?

its not the turbo making your engine run out of puff at 4k rpm.. its the very nature of long stroke diesel engines. they are very very different to petrol engines.

ah right, ok then. as i said i don't know a huge amount about how tdi's run, i'm now learning it all

so are there other things to play with other than re-maps and turbo/intercooler modifications?

not sure about what uprated injectors do.....?

not sure about what uprated injectors do.....?

as far as i know the uprated ones fire the fuel in at even higher pressure so that its finner and you get a better bang eg more power.

the exhaust would be uprated to handle the increased out put of the engine.
