water is coming down the back of the engine.
« on: 20 September 2007, 12:50 »
I have just got my Golf GTI 1984 1.8 8v believe k- type engine,  home  it has been sitting  for 2 years and not moved.
Check oil and water to fine that the oil  looks ok   the water was empty  filled this up  with just normal water and  the header tank empties, the water seems to be coming out of the back of the engine  below the exhurst  but cannot see at the moment. does this sound like the block has a crack in there?   rather than the head gasket?

The engine starts first time, with a new battery,  only ran it for a minute,  to move it  on the drive from where the recovery truck had dropped it.

sounds like a core plug has gone in the block, you could seal it up with chemical metal perhaps? but dont quote me on that as i am not sure.
i must buy a new car!

i,ve had this problem on 2 of my golfs now it sounds like the core plugs to me these are cheap to buy but a pig to fit personaly i'd change them all cause if 1's gone theres a chance another will go best way to do it i've found is remove the exhaust manifold etc cause if you go at it from below the steering rack and everthing else is in the road.
