Stuttering Problem - Golf GTI 8v 2.0 95/M
« on: 18 September 2007, 19:28 »
Hi guys,

Hoping somebody can shed some light on this.

The last 2 months my car (the good old intermitent) tends to stutter, its quite hard to explain but some times foot down it feels like it is struggling to pull, the revs go up but it almost feels like that feeling when your running out of fuel, gradually losing power and slightly stuttering along and then picks up again.

It does not do this all the time and more noticeable between 3000/4000 revs but is quite regular.

Its just about managing to get me work and back and until pay day there is not alot i can do till then so hopefully some advice from you guys can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for reading

Michael.

Hey, i had a problem that sounds similar to yours. The guys on here suggested replacing the ECU and Fuel Pump relays (no's 30 & 167). Its quite a common problem apparently. These relays can be found above the fuses in the fuse box which is by the drivers right knee.

Other suggestions were cleaning the throttle body and also cleaning/replacing the MAF sensor.

Im no expert though so dont take my word for it

I will add that when people suggested replacing the 2 relays i went down to my car and took them out. I then put the same ones back in again and the problem had gone!! Im sure it will return soon though...and when it does i will get 2 brand new ones.

Could be worth a try??

Thanks for the reply matt.

I did see your own post on this subject actually last night when i posted mine i was searching around the forums and some good advice there.

A post i made over a year ago was solved over a relay problem which VW did not pick up and many other garages and after spending over £200 on a coil, rotar arm etc and other things it turned out to be the relay which cost me £4 quid, so am preying its the same with this, will try replacing and update as necessary.

Thanks

I would give the throttle body a good clean first and then try the relay's... good thing is a clean throttle body will help the engine run better anyway as over the years the butterfly gets gummed up and stops it closing and opening correctly... best £4 mod you can do. and the relay's (ecu and fuel pump) are problematic and only buy genuine vw one's (about £10-12 per relay)
have a look in the mk3 section where a throttle body clean and relay problems are well documented
