Golf cabrio HELP?
« on: 29 February 2004, 23:04 »
Can anyone suggest whats wrong with my cabrio? The fuel filler neck was incorrectly fitted as the breather pipe was not connected properly allowing water and dirt to be sucked into the petrol tank. The water and dirt were cleaned out via the lifter pump access under rear seats but the car refuses to start first time, requiring the starter to be turned for around 6-10 seconds before starting. It also stutters very badly and has no power (refuses to go above 80mph!).

I have checked all the electrics and the problem appears to be fuel related. I have replaced injectors as i thought they may be blocked and have run dry fuel through the system to make sure there is no water left in the system. The fuel pump seems to be making the usual noises at start up. Any ideas???

Car is H reg 1990 1.8 gti cabrio with dx engine k-jet

Fuel Filter?
May also be worth taking the pump off and gicing it a good clean

I have the same problem with mine.  It churns for about 5-10 seconds before firing up.  I read elsewhere within this forum, that it could be down to leaky injectors dribbling fuel into the chambers while the engine is stood.  It was suggested, as a temporary fix, to disconnect the power supply to the cold start valve.  This has improved starting quite a bit.  So my problem could be due to leaky injectors.

I am now in the process of trying to find the cause of my problem.

Hope this helps somewhat, but I doubt it, as you have already replaced your injectors.  I will keep you informed of any advancements
into the root of my problem.

BTW, did you replace your injectors with new ones, and if so where did you get them and how much are they for a set?

I replaced the injectors as I was recommended by a friend who said they get clogged up often so I thought it wouldn't do any harm. Injector were ?27.50+VAT from german swedish french carparts and the chap gave me a ?10 discount just for asking. Local garage have told it could be my fuel distributor but the valve underneath seems to be moving freely but may be blocked. I also renewed my fuel filter but was fitted just before I found the water and dirt in fuel tank so I don't know if it will still be okay?

Try checking your fuel tank for water by taking rear seats out and taking lift pump out. Mine was full of water and dirt. Keep me posted if you find a solution.

taken the pump off yet???

Its pretty easy to get too..

Mines does the same every once in a while and its usually the Pump that gets jammed or 'sticky', even blows the fuse sometimes.

I had a similar problem with my mk1. I needed to crank it to get it going and it would not go over 4000 rpm. I cleaned out the tank, checked my injectors for leaks and pray pattern, changed the fuel filter but nothing seemed to work. One of my mates?s suggested I put some red x in with a tank of petrol which I did and to my amazement it actually worked. I always thought it was a gimmick but now if I ever have a fuel problem I always put a bottle of this in first.

What exactly is red x? Some sort of fuel treatment? Also, can anyone tell me whether the fuel tank should be under pressure or vacuum? When I open my fuel cap air is pushed out of the tank whereas I thought k-jets should operate under vacuum??

I haven't taken the pump off yet as I haven't had too much time. How long does it take? Is it just a case of nuts and bolts holding it to the underside of the car with clips to hold onto the fuel lines? How do I go about cleaning it out?
