To buy or not to buy

Guys

It seems you all are very knowledgeable so I'm asking for your help.

Should I buy a 6 month old R32? I'm weighing up the pro's and con's of driving experience against cost and running costs.

Convince me, I'm confused....

Cheers

Depends on the price that you pay as to whether to get an R32 or not.

This thread could run and run and may well just end up confusing the situation rather than cementing it :undecided:

Personally I would choose a GTI (standard or ED30) over an R32. Just ask Illyun. he's had both and still ended up back with an ED30.

R32 drinks more and the tax is double that of a GTI, but if you can afford it and you aren't tempted by the GTI then the R32 is a great car.

I ended up with the Ed30 because my head prevailed over my heart.  The Ed30 is a long term purchase for me and I reckon will hold its value better over the long term than the R32.  Also with fuel prices being what they are, I found the R32 taking over £200 in petrol against around £150 for the GTI... the R32 engine makes you want to put your foot down just to hear the V6 sound which is amazing.  Finally, the Ed30 GTI is lighter and more nimble than the R32 and more of a fun car.

If money wasn't an issue and the Ed30 wasn't an anniversary model, I'd get the R32.  Its the best car I have ever had - maybe I'm a bit misty eyed because I had the drive of my life in it from Ipswich to Gibraltar.  But it is a serious and mature car comapred to the Ed30 and I bought the R32 after owning a standard M5 GTI... and I much preferred the R32 over the standard GTI.  Part of that was to do with the fact that the R32 had DSG and my standard GTI was manual.  I didn't like my manual Ed30 when I part-exd my R32 for it either.  The current DSG Ed30 I have is brilliant - but I still miss the R32 badly and reckon on balance, its a better car than the Ed30, but only just and not by a large a margin as to justify the higher running costs.

Id have the rear end look of an R32 anyday, but prefer the looks, running costs/performance of the GTi. Both are cars to be seen in, and enjoy the ammount of envious looks you'll get!

Guys

Thanks for your responses. I did drive the ED30 today and it feels totally different, although looks wise inside it's exactly the same and aside from the exhausts the alloys are the only thing that seperate it.

But putting your foot down gives you a different feeling altogether.

My main problem is not to buy R32 or GTI, it's to buy R32 or not at all. It's without doubt an exciting car but my question is, is it worth the money.

It drives beautifully though and I can only imagine what would happen if I really pushed it on the test drive.

One other question, new alloys or old alloys. I think the old ones are Zolder which look a lot better than the new ones.

Once again, thanks for all your help, I am totally confused whether to throw caution to the wind or be sensible.....

Prefer the new style alloys to the Zolders. Easier to clean too.

Sheeeeeeeeat

Been reading all the posts on this forum.

Looks like GAP insurance is a must. Is this available as part of the insurance or only from VW?
