Interestingly , they also state that they tested the OE 18 inch with Bridgestones RE050-A and they were WORSE!!! 2.5 sec a lap slower than 17's tested above.

Not unheard of. We run a control yokohama semi-slick tyre (A048R), and unless you have a heavy car (Say 1500kg or more) the the lower profiles just don't work. Not enough flex in the sidewall, resulting in poor drive.

We changed from 215x45x17 to 225x50x16, and gained 2 seconds a lap.
So lower profile is not always the way to go. In most cases the only benefit fit is the ability to fit bigger brakes.
But 18" wheels do look good on a GTI

Thanks speedynz...

We all like to think that we're a 'hand' at the wheel and we'll notice minute differences in chassis attitude according the chosen tyres but in reality we're more 'hand jobs' at the wheel and wouldn't differentiate block flex and progressive slip angles from a range of tyres if they were served to us for dinner.

can say I understood much of it, but point taken! btw either you just made that up to illustrate the point, or 'hand job' means something different in NZ!
