Buying a G60...Some Q's
« on: 14 September 2007, 10:55 »
I have had an 8v for the last couple of years and have come to know the MKII backwards. But I am going to cross grade (Not up grade as all GTI's I believe are as good as each other.) to a 16v or G60. Tomorrow I am looking at a G60. Any specific points I should look for indiginous to this model?

usual mk2 stuff, radiators are expensive, i know that as I own one, check to see if it still has cat, most have been removed.

Clutch replacement not cheap either. Make sure ABS light goes out. Should be very quick.

some questions for you to ask
1) When was the charger last overhalled and do you have proof!!!
2) Standard chks rust cream on oil
3) Over heating
4) Rough idle cold and really warm (vac pipes last changed over)
5) Gear box and linkages
6) knock sensors (solid and does not spin or crumble.
7) Boost pipes for softness lower ones.
8) oil from crank and oil return lines from head to charger
9) MFA checks for boost levels and the like.

Have a read of the G60 guide on the Matey Matey site, thats a very good start.

But as Jay says..
1) Charger servicing and by who?
2) Pulley Size?
3) Uprated oil cooler? Mocal?
4) Condition of Oil feed line to charger

Check it doesn't blow too much smoke on startup or when backing off a full throttle.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Thanks guys. Will let you know how it goes when I've seen it. The description over the phone indicates that its far from perfect. Break in damage that left the dash with a couple of holes in it and the rear parcel shelf missing. No radio either. (Pinched) I gather there will be some door damage too. There is a little dent behind the drivers door. (Left hooker) The engine is ok but has a noisy tappet. The compressor works but I don't think has been touched.
It is red with BBS alloys, and comes with a years test. It has done 135000kms, which is about 79000 miles. One owner from new. This car is for sale for 1500€uros, which is about £1000.
Once my car is gone, I will probably get it anyway and make a little project out of it.
See it on the link below.

P.S. She brought the price down over the phone.

One owner from new? You could prolly tripple that price easily selling it over here. Tidy the dinks up and that, and being a Spannish VW it wont have suffered any rust like over here. Compressor? Air conditioning right?

Yeah, you know you want to.

Well, I went to see it today and first impressions to the 'not in the know clan' is that its a tatty one. HOWEVER, I'm gonna buy it. (When mine sells) The motor is good, compressions good although it has a very noisy tappet. This I will cure with a cam kit change. The rest is cosmetic. She's a straight one although there are a few blemishes in the paintwork. She also needs a new windscreen.
The alloys are BBS and are generally in good nick, although one need an overhall. I already have a set of Sebrings Which can go on for the time being whilst the originals get done.
The compressor works but needs a service. The dent in the body behind the drivers door looks like it will just pop out.
My intention is to do the engine first, compressor and cam. Then replace the plastic work, bumpers and give it a paint job. That is when I will change the windscreen and plastic work, as I will remove all the windows and plastic to make the paint job semi respectable.
Ideally it needs a new dash as this one was damaged during the break in. The seat bases also need rebuiling, but that is not a problem.
Will post piccies when I get the car and open up a post on Dub Projects.
Looking forward to this one!
BTW. How do I post photos on here? Tried photo bucket and could not make it work.

photobucket is your best bet....

once you've managed to upload the pics, copy the link starting with [img] into your posts... preview your post to make sure it's all ok before submitting :)
