Milltek full system: street legal?
« on: 11 September 2007, 19:59 »
Today I got contacted by Sportec, they offered me a cat-back exhaust for my Ed30. I've contacted them a couple of months ago and told them I want Milltek Ed30 exhaust installed and asked them for a quote. They kept me on their potential client list.

So, anyway, I responded that I am actually waiting for turbo-back Milltek exhaust.
The answer I got was that full system is no longer street legal!  :undecided: Damnit! That's bad news.  Gotta find out if what they said is true.  :undecided:

They also offered me a remap to 275hp/380Nm. But I got my eyes set on Ottinger remap.

Thanks for your comments, the full system is not street leagal anymore but I am sure, it will offer some additional power.
Just to let you know we have just developped the ECU upgrade based on a original car and the result was amazing:

Obviously not anymore in Switzerland.
I wonder what this street legality means? Is it related to insurance only?
I mean, does not the guy in email suggest that one can still drive with a different cat? "Let me know if you need a hand when you would need to reprogram your ECU due to another cat composition."  :undecided:

Actually..using my business head...maybe its not street legal but he is trying to offer you this new ECU program to try and pull you into like the trap...maybe the ECU hasnt been tested right or like been used in the real world and want to try and sell a few to get feedback from customers....but i wouldnt see why the turbo back exhaust would be illegal....wait for like one of the more experienced guys such as TT or RedRobin get on....pretty sure they will know how to help

Probably just applies to Switzerland. I recall Clarkson on Top Gear driving a Ferrari through Europe to some ski resort and commenting on the Swiss authorities fhard attitude to motoring. Don't like speeding, noise, emissions etc.

No offence Peskarik

....The Milltek Hi-flow+Downpipe (aka Turbo-back) IS most definitely street legal in the UK. Also, I am confident it's bollox that the ECU has to be modified in any way to accommodate the exhaust. The ECU is 'smart' and instantly reactive to the exhaust etc etc, but T_T will know more about this I expect.

no offence taken
they like to charge you for everything here (can you imagine a parking ticket at 3.20AM on a small residential street outside the city?!). Also, charges are sometimes relative to income. A friend of my boss was once charged several thousand CHF (if not several 10000 CHF) for speeing.

Yeah, you are right about UK legality.

Until a few years ago, all aftermarket exhausts were illegal, unless they were British Standard, or EU Type Approved.  This was relaxed though, because aftermarket and modified exhausts became quite endemic in the UK, but it seemed that only motorcyclists were targeted by the "law".  I think the latest requirement states that it must emit a sound level which is broadly similar to an OEM spec.  This is very handy, because a Milltek for my RS4 sounds roughly the same as my standard zorst with the sport button pressed.

Also, I am confident it's bollox that the ECU has to be modified in any way to accommodate the exhaust. The ECU is 'smart' and instantly reactive to the exhaust etc etc, but T_T will know more about this I expect.

Again, you are correct.  However, whilst there is no requirement to modify the ECU, the standard ECU map will only adapt upto a certain level.  If you simply go for a cat-back, with no other mods, then the standard ECU map should be fine.  But if you go for a turbo-back, with a hi-flow sports cat, and possible a revised intake - then a remap should be considered to "release" the full potential of the modifications, though again, there is no absolute need to.

Check out their website: http://www.millteksport.com/exhaust.products.cfm?variantid=159.  If you can't find the specific info, then pick up the dog, or e-mail them - they are a very approachable and helpful company.
