iPod Adapter

My iPOD isn't being picked up.  From my last Ed30 you just stuck it in and it worked?  Am I doing something wrong?

Ilyun. Take the car to the dealer. Ours did that too and they simply plug the car in and "enable" the Ipod Dock. It will take less than a few minutes for them to do. Its meant to be enabled obviously but dealers tend to forget things...cough....cough.

iPod Touch has the same dock connector as the current Nano and Video iPod so it should connect, although I'm not sure how it will fit size wise into the slot in the armrest.

It's very tight, without a case on, and sits a bit too proud to allow the armrest to close. Also, it's only tight on the sides, not the face, so is free to wibble wobble around. However a USA company called CableJive to a cable which extends the dock connector. Works out at about £21 including shipping, and takes a week to get here.

I bought the cablejive cable. Just back after plugging it into the OEM iPod Preparation in my centre armrest. Connected my 32GB Touch to it and all worked well. And there's enough space inside the armrest to sit the touch on it's side, still in it's InCase case. You gotta push a couple of loops of cable into the OEM dock to make space, but this also helps ensure the cable won't pop off the connector in the dock... space is so tight that it's a bit tricky to get it onto the dock you see.

Obviously, you still can't navigate music from the ipod itself since it stills says that an accessory is connected, but no surprise there. Still, easier and less precarious that putting the touch directly onto the OEM connector, and you can now close the arm rest.

I brought a cablejive cable too, very handy for my iphone, as it I put it on the rubber drinks cover thingy, very good spot to put it.

Just remembered that next week the new iPod Touch is coming out and i have put one aside for myself....curious to know will the new iPod work with the iPod adapter that comes with the car or would i need to change the adapter in the VW?

Hi Manu - Had the touch for a couple of months now.  The connection is the same as the last iPod 30 and 60GB Video.  However, neither work on my factory fit now - need to book in with the dealer - grr!!!!

Phil, thanks for the reply! Posted this in September last year so iv had the iPod for quite a while 
After i found how bad the ipod set up on the VW set up was i had to get rid of the head unit so get myself a Kenwood DNX7200 thanks to Hurdy. Was deffinatley alot happier with that! 

Anyways considering youv brought this thread up i think im picking up my new car sometime next week and i have chosen for the new RNS510 (touch screen nav by VW)...Anyone know if the ipod set up works differently or possibly better than the previous VW Headunits?? Good thing is it has an SD Card slot so atleast i can store up to 30gbs worth of music there but would be nice if the iPod worked well too

While we are talking Ipods and the VW connections - is there anyway to get the track names from the ipod to list on VW factory stereo when it is connected. Mine just displays it as tracks from 6 CDs?

No you cannot get the VW audio systems to display tracks. To say the VW IPOD prep is a rip off is an understatement. It was my main reason for going to an aftermarket set-up. If VW did a set up like mine, it would probably cost £3k

I have an 80gb IPOD playing through a Kenwood DNX7200 double din head unit. The head unit will play DVD straight from the IPOD. The IPOD connectivity is fantastic and far better than any other I have seen so far. It is hyper fast at scrolling through the tracks as it uses a 2.0 USB port. You can select all the options that you can from the IPOD through the Kenwoods touchscreen, plus most often and most recently played options. There is also a touchscreen bar at one side of the screen that lets you instantly track down to any part of a list, so you don't have to scroll through 5,000 plus tracks.

In addition the Kenwood also has a hard drive based Sat Nav, DVD playback, Bluetooth handsfree (I had put in as an extra), and a reverse parking camera (also an extra and much better than reverse sensors).

Sound wise I was a little disappointed with the standard speakers and so binned them in favour of Hertz "Hi energy" component speakers up front, coax speakers in the rear and a 10" sub in the boot. An amp powers the front components and the sub. Plenty of Dynamat sound deadening throughout and it now has a top quality sound to it

Sounds like a quality setup there Hurdy - I like the fact that you have it all in one, i.e satnav and bluetooth. Couple of questions:
Can you still use the MF steering wheel to control the volume? (Important to me)
Does the sat nav display on the H/line computer (not so important but nice to have).
Does the ipod stay in its special home under the armrest or do you have to relocate to the glovebox?

I didn't choose the MF steering wheel, but on previous threads I have been asked this question and my local audio technician who says it is possible to do it.

Sat nav doesn't display on the highline as the software isn't compatible

The IPOD can stay in the armrest, but the specific wiring needs to be fed to it if you want to use it there. Mine sits in the glovebox, which I find easier anyway.

Manu, the factory fit ipod connection into the the RNS 510 works the same as with any other VW head unit, in short, crap.  You only get the play 99 tracks at a time and you can not see ID3 tags etc.
There is meant to be a new cable coming out to cure this, I hope!

Cheers Hurdy - an aftermarket option like this seems much better value for money than the OEM stuff.
Did you consider any other units apart from the Kenwood? There is this Pioneer which has the bluetooth built in and seems like a good price...
