had the day free today to do a bit if wrenching on the golf.

1st job... oil drain & then run through some flushing oil..... done
2nd job... new sump gasket, check out the oil pump strainer & pump gear backlash etc.. done
3rd job...fresh oil & filter...done

the above were to see if i could cure the tappy tappets on cold start....they were very noisy...  seems to have helped them once warm, a little quieter now, but still noisy cold so looks like it's going to have to be a new set very soon

4th job... cambelt & tensioner.... well i got so far, rocker cover off, alt. & pas belts off water pump pulley....then trouble...I could not figure out how that crank pulley comes off to remove the lower cambelt cover

admitting defeat i tensioned up the cambelt to spec (it was slack) and put everything back together and went out for a drive to burn of the masses of oil i spilt when the missus crept up on me.

so if you managed to get through all that I wondered if anyone knows how to do a cambelt on a 8v with power steering? i.e how to get that crank pulley off to remove the timing belt cover, It'll be great to know as next time i attempt this I'll most likely be doing the tppets as well, any help much appreciated

The pulley is held on with 4 allen bolts, the end of the cranksahft has a splined end, a 19mm socket fits this, put a powerbar on this and lock it off against floor/chassis, then crack the allen bolts off(6mm) I think, before you take the pulley off ensure you mark the peg with some paint, this peg is between two of the allen heads -this is a notch on the end of the crank pulley that pokes through a hole in the belt pulley to align the timing notches. Hope this helps, remember to use a bit of duck oil or wd40 to help free things up. To tension the belt I used a pair of circlip pliers with a 90 degree head on them, and change the tensioner too, bearings on these do fail!

cheers for the help fella

yeah I managed getting the pas pulley (number 9 below) off with a little effin and blindin but couldnt figure out how number 5 came off (has eight holes in it - so there's me thinking there would be another four allen headed bolts recessed in the other 4 holes or something, no wonder i couldnt find anything to grip on with all manner of splined & allen keys. looking at this.... it appears as though the four allen headed bolts holding the pas pulley, go straight through to the crank sprocket and hold both pulleys on.  :embarassed:

righto...so my next question is.. once I get number 9 is off again what's the best way of getting number 5 off...that badboy wasnt budging for nobody... I'll have to use a puller i guess?

cheers mate, yeah it looked like it was on solid . I guess it can wait a few weeks now, the belt was in decent nick and the tensioner is now doing its job, i think next time i take this apart I'm gonna spend a little extra time and do the tappets as well

as long as the golf gets me around I'll be happy... I've still gotta drop the motor in the green car below to find out why compression is so low on 1 cyl, and tweak the rear bumper/engine lid where some sh*t drive ito it, oh and get the red one prepared for paint.... oh and hold down a full time job.... oh and keep the missus happy

Knock it on, rather than off, its just accumulated dirt and rust holding it on, its a pretty solid pulley so give it some nice coaxing off!!

it is easier to undo the pas pump and move it out of the way. the pulley drops down with it and the belt slips off.
