Taking my Golf V5 Abroad
« on: 07 September 2007, 15:00 »
Hi all,

Thinking of taking my Golf V5 abroad to France in a couple of weeks and I'm in need of some advice.

I'm going to take the Ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre, then drive to LeMans and hopefully head down the west coast for some surfing and wine/beer tasting ;-) Now the thing is do i legally need a GB sticker, and do i need those headlamp stickers to stop blinding the french drivers in the other direction? What other things do i need to sort before i go?

Has anybody here done anything similar and if you have a list of "must see's" or places to stay, i would be most grateful to hear them.

Thanks in advance

Martin

Drove to Belgium.. didn't need to do anything at all to my car. I bought extra European AA cover though.. and make sure your insurance covers your car abroad too - you may need to show proof. Oh and don't forget your driving license.

You really should have the sticker things to avoid blinding other drivers  - but I don't think you need a GB sticker anymore

also check out other laws - for instance you're required to carry a warning trianlge and set of spare bulbs when driving in France, and there's a few other things too. - Almost cirtainly won't get pulled up on these things, but I perosnlaly would rather play it safe!

here's a link to all the laws and stuff:

also leave your speed camera detector at home if you have one as i believe they are illegal in France

i'm pretty sure the AA have a guide to european driving, i travelled round europe last year in a car and its amazing how many different laws there are, for instance in some countrys you need to be able to change your bulbs at the side of the road, some places require fire extinguishers etc.
