as its an 1989 model it shouldnt be too bad on rust, the later ish ones had better rust protection on them. after 86 i think. But check the usual places, arches, around the windscreen, door sills etc.
as its only a 1.3 it prob wont of been ragged about so as long as it looks tidy and starts and runs well you should be laughing.
The weak point on any non gti Mark 2 is the carb. When you get there feel the bonnet to see if its warm before you knock on the door. Some people run the car first so that its not starting from cold for when i viewer comes round. So check that. Check that it idles smoothly. It wont have a rev counter but you should be able to tell whether its idling smoothly or not by the sound of it.
best of luck

Check the boot around the window seal for rust as thats where all the muck gets thrown on a mk2. stand back from it about 8 feet and check for straightness front to back and side to side. get on your knees and check underneath for any dings and dints around the front jacking point. lift the driver and passenger carpets and check for water or marks from water. open and close the sunroof if it has one, if the seller cringes you know to ask him why. on the test drive if it has an MFA test it to make sure it displays mpg. open bonnet and check for water marking and leaks from coolant. ask him to start it from cold whilst standing behind and watch for any smoke. Check the gear changes from 1st to second and 1st to reverse.
~Other than that welcome to the wonderful world of dubbing
