More Power???
« on: 26 February 2004, 22:55 »
I have a 1.3 golf. I wish to have a bit more power. Do you think the best way to do this is a rebore, or just a whole new engine from a 16V or something? Also, i am 19 so, cant afford too much, so insurance cant go up too much!! Does any one have a rough idea about the prices of both these options? What other cheap, effective ways are there of increasing acceleration, uphills etc...?

Try a better carb. I read about a  new carb just been relaunced called a 'fisheye' or something with fish at the beginning!. It used to be around in the 60's and 70's but back on sale.  up to 25 Bhp for a two hundred and something quid

I wouldn't think you could re-bore a 1.3 to anything decent, and if you did it'd probably be a bit dodgy.

Best bet, buy Dizzie's 8v engine when he's done his swap.
The 8v will give you decent performance for modest insurance outlay.

On the other hand, a scrappy near me has a couple of 16v lumps in.

I'm guessing the engine would drop straight in and you just swap over the bits of loom you'd get off me with yours and it should work.

Heres a few things ive done to my 1.6 carb thats helped:

1) where the carb connects to your left front 1/4 pannel theres a small pad inside that restricts the air, RESTRICTING it being the opperative word, Remove that and fit a small square of wire gause inside the hole instead, now reattatch your carb

2) Clean your throttle boddy and carb using carb cleaner!

3) Dont just bolt on a muffler to your piping, Get your self a whole new exhaust kit from the manafold back

4) Uprated spark plugs and leads often do wonders

5) oil change

6) Giving the car a few good thrashings to the redline and back can sometimes clean out the moter nicely  ;D

Oil change wont make a differencee as that is done regularly... With the resrictor in the carb, are you sure that'll be the same in my car as the 1.3 engine layout is totally different to the 1.6. Also thats directed at dizzie, the engine layout is very different, will that matter?

na. you'll just drop in everything apart from your water bottles and a couple of other things. you'll need a new exhaust manifold though. mine's blowing a little bit.

How many miles has it done? Can you take a picture of it in your car, so i can see the layout of it, or has it already come out?
