Starter Motor Problem.............................AGAIN!!!

Hi there I've got a MK3 golf 16v.
I'm having a similar problem, I'm on my second recon starter motor this year. Its mainly if I go on long journeys and Im stuck in traffic for a long time, I get an electric smell, I know I'll have problems starting the car. Once started the car runs fine. I've got a new battery, recently serviced, new starter motor but when I get in to start it just clicks, if I tap it with a hammer it starts, or if I push start it?? Any help welcome - Is this a common problem or is it just my car

Sounds like a dodgy connection to me.

Does the MK3 have spade connections?  If so have you tried squeezing them with pliers so that they fit on the Starter nice and tight.

May be it is just the Starter Motor, they usually come with a 12 month Warranty, don't they.

Try cleaning up the earths on the starter, and earth straps from engine/gearbox to chassis.
