I have another annoying problem with a 2E2 carb.

Some time ago the car started to run with a very high idle speed of approx 3000rpm. I solved this temporarily by messing with some of the vacuum pipes, I didn't know what I was doing!
I eventually replaced the 'pull down unit' and the 'idling-over-run-control valve' and recently the rubber carb mounting flange.
But after all this when I plugged the electrical leads back into this idle control valve the revs shot up again so now I run with it unplugged and the car runs reasonably well but not great and it's also not great on fuel either, about 25mpg.

Can anyone help with a way to check the carb and recommend a way to tune it up?

Next thing to look at might be the waxstat, its mounted on the front below the pull down unit, and has 2 coolant hoses coming out of it.

You can check its working by chucking it in a bowl of boiling water, you should see a pin pop out of it.  This treatment can sometimes fix dodgy units as it resets the Wax I've heard?  Either way they're cheap to buy from GSF.

Checked the price with the local VAG at ?44 plus VAT.... They seem to think that that won't be the problem as the symtoms the car has would be different - not idling when cold but ok when hot. Whereas my car has a v. high engine speed hot or cold(over 3000rpm) unless I pull the electrical plug out of the 'idling overrun control valve' and then it runs ok.
