280mm brakes

hey all!  firstly, i apologise if this question gets asked all the time, but i couldnt find a thread with the info i wanted.  im looking to fit G60 280mm brakes to mt 16v (1989) golf.  do i need to replace the master cylinder aswell?  i assume the hubs are a straight swap, with the calipers and carriers aswell.  also, will the G60 brakes definatly fit under 15" riims?  in particular the BBS RA's?

they will NOT fit under BBS RA's - the back of the spokes foul on the caliper with 280mm setup

you say your car is an 89 therefore it should have the 256mm brake setup. even if it is a small bumper model - but double check.

as long as you have 256mm setup then you wont need to change the hubs, you just need to fit the 280mm calipers and carriers.

u will not need to replace the master cylinder but i do suggest you fit braided brake lines

Hey Gambit, you can just use the caliper carriers, no need to change the calipers - unless they's fubar!?

thanks for the info, i will try and source some 280mm carriers,  if i do have the 256mm disks.  im guessing if i still use the old calipers i would need G60 pads, is this correct?  i was going to go for some braided hoses, thats all part of the master plan.  the only issue now is the alloys...

if u use the 256mm calipers then you need to shave a couple of mm of any new brake pads you fit as they cant cope with the extra 2mm width of the 280mm disks

You can change the wheels for a set of Sebring alloys. It is what most of the G60's are fitted with. Unless of course you want an aftermarket wheel. Then you can take the car to the wheel dealer and they will fit them.

Sorry to bring up an old thread then highjack said thread....

I'm running the 239mm setup on a '90 8v, would I need to change the 'wheel bearing housing' to a 16v item or are they the same? also someone asked the question are the drive shafts from the 8v and the 16v hub compatable?

when i put 280mm brakes on mine i bought hubs, carriers, calipers etc off a corrado and they fitted my drive shafts, so i'd "assume" you'd be ok. by wheel bearing housing i guess you mean the hub?

no I mean the section that the wheel bearing fits into, where the lower ball joint supports and where the caliper bolts to.
