Do they carry out the initial "self alignment" calibration?

I take it you mean when you start up they the left and right beams move left and right then towards each other then if I remember correctly up and down- then yes they do.....so aids the techs conclusion that the beam pattern is correct.

That is the calibration pattern for the "adaptive" headlamps.  For conventional, or B-Xenons, they simply go up and down.
