Steering Rack
« on: 15 August 2007, 21:14 »
Just had a second new steering rack fitted today.  First new one was fitted back in March but went the same way as the original (creaking/grinding noise).

Known problem in early Mk 5's. Should have been well sorted by now. Keep the pressure on VW UK - steering rack supplier needs to be spanked

Write to VW UK Customer Services to register a complaint. What age/milegae is your car ?

It's an 2006 55 plate, approx 11k on the clock.  Dealer says that the rack they have just fitted is a further revision of the revised rack.

Plan to write to VW UK because I also have a engine idling problem (intermittent problem, sometimes car feels like its going to stall when sat at traffic lights) which dealer acknowledges but can not resolve.

Manual or DSG ?

Might be a software update to the latter.

I have the same idling problem (Have had all the software upgrades). Dealer says it's because the Gti 2.0T engine is "highly tuned". Load of cobblers. Let me know how you get on slane.

Its a manual but car was recalled back in March for an engine upgrade.  You got me thinking now if that could be the cause of the problem?

Is the problem worse with your foot on the brake when stationary at lights ?

Hi Cass

Yeh thats definately the case, maybe we should write to VW jointly so they aware its not an isolated case.  I've also got the grinding brakes problem, how about you?

Got neither of these fortunately, just thought the ignition isssue could be linked to a brake servo problem.

Mine stopped groaning when I took my foot off the brake, which lead me to believe it's might not be the rack.
