lol It will still be expensive next year. For me at 19 to be owner and main driver on a 1.8T MK4 was £3500 . . . . . .

This obviously varies depending on occupation, location, NCB but you get my drift.

Just to give you an idea for me at 26 years old with no ncb, third party on a Mk3 VR6 was £1200 with HIC

a bit high because I'd only held my licence for 18 months or so at the time, and a Mk5 GTI is (I think) a higher ins group anyway... so just being a year older isn't going to help you much!

Just put up with driving around in a 1.2 or something and enjoy paying less road tax

If I'd had a VR6 at 17, with the mentality I had then (and most people I know), I would have died for sure. Might've managed to be slightly more dead in a Mk5 GTI....

Totally agree. It's not a good idea to start out on something so fast. Getting the experience first and then moving to something faster later on is the most sensible thing one can do. I drove around in a 1.3 car until I was 20 and glad I did too.

i agree im 22 with 2 year no claims and it would be only £870 a year fully comp on the 1.8t, shame i cannot afford one

the amount of years you have held your licence is just as important a sno claims i found this out with quotes and changing years passed my test

Best to get something more standard and get your no claims... that will open doors to many insurance places that wont ask you to bend over for a quote!! At 20 i had an XR3i which cost £600 to insure (that was 11 years ago tho) when all my mates were paying that for 1.1 fiestas due to being on daddys policies

Little engine, big car = Slooooow...

If you're talking about a brand new car I wouldn't bother... since you'll definitely want to get something with an engine in it later, you'll end up losing loads on the depreciation.  Buy an older car for a couple of years - a Mk3 or something.  Plus you're bound to get the odd ding and scrape while you're still inexperienced, and it doesn't matter so much if the car's already past its best.

Plus for what it would cost for new or nearly-new 1.4 Polo or something, you could probably buy a MK3 GTI and pay for insurance on it....
