Porsche 924

The porsche 924 was originally intended to be a new sporty model in the VW line up in the early 70's and it was designed by Porsche to use as many parts as possible from the then VW/Audi parts bin. The engine in the car is the 1984cc engine and was taken from the Audi 100. The gearbox was in the back of the car and that also came from the Audi 100 and the rear suspension used a similar set up to the 1303 super beetle.

VW and Porsche had already released a CO-OP car in the form of the Porsche 914 which was essentially a beetle under the skin and sales of that had been good so they had hoped to emulate the same success with the 924.

When VW released their then new front wheel drive models (golf, scirocco) they were unsure as to how they would fare after the buying public had been so used to having a rear engine, rear wheel drive VW and so the 924 project was dropped and Porsche bought back the design rights to the car.

The most interesting part about the 924 is that the car was built in the VW factory at Neckarsulm and porsche paid VW an agreed sum for each 924 made by VW.

I'm not sure, but i am still thinking about it.
At the end of the day it is a very old car, could be more hassle than its worth.

I remember seeing a yellow 924 in Street Machine or Custom Car Mags, running some sort of V8 lump I think, Im sure it runs in a  Pro street class or something, but it looks awesome....  Ive always been a sucker for Porsches, although the nearest Ive come in to owning one in the last 33 years is to have a set of 944 'Cookie Cutter' alloys on my beetle back in the 90's ... and to miss out on a nice 912 when my mate bought one back from Germany just after Id bought a new car...hmmph..

Depends on whether its a fully galvanised model as then you got no rust worries.

I had a '77 Porsche 924 (2.0 Audi Engine) 13 years ago.  Bought it as a damaged repairable.  Body was OK but the engine, transaxle and many other bits arrived separately in boxes.

It was a very easy car to work on.  I had cylinder head off several times and even removed the crank for regrinding, using only standard tools.

It all went back together nicely and turned out to be a very reliable motor.  Great handling but not that quick by 1991 standards.

The ones to look out for are the 924S models with the 2.5 lite, 100% Porsche engine from the 944.  These are quick machines, but rare.

Even rarer is the 924 Turbo, effectively a 924 2.0 with a turbo and a bodykit slapped on.  These are even quicker and have serious classic status now.
